When planning your trip, it is helpful to know some basic facts and figures about Thailand. Thailand has a population of around 70 million people. The official language is Thai, but many Thais also speak English. The currency is the Thai Baht and the climate is tropical, with a rainy season from June to October. Thailand is known for its beaches, temples, markets and famous Thai cuisine. Bangkok, the capital of Thailand, is the most visited city in the country and has a lot of sights to offer.   • Thailand is home to 71.6 million people (as of 2021), almost 15 million of whom live in the metropolitan region Bangkok live here, i.e. around 20 percent of the total population.
  • The origins of the country date back to the Kingdom of Sukhothai in the 13th century, when the first independent Thai kingdom was founded, then called the "Siamese Kingdom". Later in 1782, King Rama I founded the modern Thailand we know today. It is important to emphasize that Thailand is the only country in Southeast Asia that was never conquered by a European colonial power and has always existed as an independent country.
  • The reigning King of Thailand since 2016 is Maha Vajiralongkorn, also known as King Rama X.
  • Thailand's neighboring countries include Myanmar, Laos, Cambodia and Malaysia. It lies on the Gulf of Thailand and the Andaman Sea.
  • Thailand has a total of 936 islands, of which over 500 are accessible. The rest are uninhabited.
