Mae Salong Flower Hills
The Mae Salong Flower Hills (known as DoiMok DokMai Resort) is a beautiful mountain resort in the north of Thailand! The highlight of this accommodation is the magnificent flower garden, which is maintained with a great deal of love and precision. The in-house café and the local tea specialties from the neighboring Tea plantation make your stay a special experience!

Location and surroundings
The resort is located in the north of the province Chiang Rai, not far from the border with Myanmar. We discovered this place by chance on Google Maps during our road trip. The colorful flower garden is also on the Satellite images easily recognizable. So we spontaneously booked an overnight stay and would have liked to extend our stay by 1-2 days. The location of the accommodation is quite remote, which is why in northern Thailand a Rental carª is essential. In the neighboring village Santikhiri (formerly: Mae Salong) there are a few restaurants, which close early, as well as a few mini stores. We recommend a Overnight stay with breakfast as the food at the hotel is very plentiful (even if there don't seem to be many guests at the resort).
The surrounding mountain villages belong to the Tambon Mae Salong Nok (= a sub-district in the province Chiang Rai), which lies close to the border with Myanmar. In the 1960s, this area was largely developed by Kuomintang-Chinese who fled to Thailand via Myanmar. Since then, more and more Chinese influences The region's history is still reflected today in tourism, buildings, temples, public signs and Chinese decorations.

Hotel and room categories
The accommodation consists of several buildings, which is why different room categories are offered on the booking pages, including Standard room in the main building, Suites with bathtub and mountain view and free-standing Bungalows with a terrace or balcony. We had a bungalow apartment (superior room) on the first floor with a small terrace, which was perfectly adequate for one night. The upper rooms with a balcony are a little more expensive, but offer a nicer view. View of the tea plantation. In general, the rooms are a bit outdated, but still usable and the view makes up for everything!

Another highlight was the large swimming pool, which is right next to the tea plantations and turns into a magical place at sunset. We were also pleasantly surprised by the many Animals at the resort. In addition to stray cats, there were also deer and rabbits that had their own enclosure on the grounds. The staff looked after the animals very lovingly and offered to feed them on request. In general, we had the feeling that all the staff at Mae Salong Flower Hills are very happy and enjoy doing their job - whether at reception, cleaning the rooms, in the café, with the animals or in the flower garden!
Note: According to Booking.com this accommodation is for adults only (which we did not initially assume due to the animal enclosures on site) - in fact, there were no children on site. So unfortunately it was not family-friendly accommodation.
Tip:: If you are traveling from Chiang Mai to Mae Salong, you will pass the Japanese Hinoki country and to the hot springs in Fang past. The route to Chiang Rai leads via the famous Choui Fong tea plantations.
